Description
Teaching English at different levels of education has been largely characterized by a heavy emphasis on the mastery of grammatical rules with a lack of attention being given to how language operates in different social contexts. In most cases, students would spend most of their time in class sitting back and listening to the teacher, doing exercises in the prescribed textbook or at best, repeating what the teacher says and reading out aloud a particular dialogue. These types of activities are more mechanical than meaningful as there is almost an absence of purpose, social context, and a sense of relevance to students’ everyday life, let alone their imagined future in regard to the importance of learning English. With those in mind, it stands to reason that the teaching of English in most educational context has been predicated more on the assumption that teaching English is analogous to transmission of knowledge taking place in an isolated cognitive space, with little regard for learners’ identity, sociocultural background, and agency.
